(EXCALIBUR'S POV)

Our story began in the 12th century. At the time, I just worked under Lord Death as one of his own men. I had white hair and green eyes, and I wore all-white armor. I was famous for my flirtatiousness, but never found the one girl I wanted to be eternally mine. I was so popular back then that I could have had anyone. But I didn't want just anyone.

I wanted...
Her.

She was beautiful in every way, from her gorgeous smile and flawless eyes to her kindness and gentle nature. Her name was Lady (y/n) of the (l/n) Estate. She was playing with children in the marketplace when I first saw her. They were small and dirty, though they made her look even more pure than she appeared. She came there daily and patiently waited for her with little smiles on their faces. Oh, how their faces brightened when they saw her!
And how my face reddened the day she caught my gaze.

She smiled softly and approached me. She wore a (f/c) dress with puffy sleeves and her beautiful (h/c) hair in a braid slung over her shoulder. Around her forearm was a carefully woven basket. Her (e/c) eyes reflected myself.

"I have seen you around this market before. You've watched me play with the Hauteclaire children." She said.

I searched for words to use. All I could do was trip over my own speech. All Lady (y/n) would do was giggle. "May I ask of your name?" I smiled and bowed to her. "Excalibur. The Holy Sword Excalibur." He said. Her face brightened. "The Holy Sword! You are the sword of kings and queens!" She said happily. She did a curtsy. "It's such an honor." I blushed and scratched my head. "Please, compliments like that won't keep me humble." I told her. Her smile was so warm and kind, I couldn't help but smile myself. "Lady (y/n)! Come, play with us!" One of thee children exclaimed. "They look rather thin." I told her. She sighed sadly. "What you say is true because of their late parents. If there were any a group of children who were grateful just to see another day on this planet, the Hauteclaire children would be them." (y/n) said. I felt a twinge of pity for the three children. They were young and probably didn't grasp onto the true meaning of death yet. There were two little boys no older than seven, and a female of about four. "What do you do after you care for these children?" I asked her. "I normally go home and go back to my spinning wheel. Alas, it is not the life for me." She said, shaking her head. I smiled softly. "Lady (y/n) what would you say if I asked of you to join me on a quest?" I asked. "You needn't worry of the Hauteclaires; I will have men take care of them. Asura is roaming this market somewhere. I'm sure he can take them." Her face lit up once more. "Excalibur, I didn't know if it was possible for person to be as munificent as thee." Lady (y/n) said. She smiled. "Great and Munificent Excalibur. That is what your legends will call you." She said.

So much for being humble.

"Edgar! Richard! Liza! Come hither if you would!" She called. The three frail children ran to her, their big innocent eyes shining with hope. She was truly their lifeline. "Yes milady?" They all asked. Lady (y/n) knelt down to them."This is Sir Excalibur." She said. "He will have people care for you while I go on a quest with him." The littlest one, Liza, hugged her tightly around her waist.

"Don't go Lady (y/n)! We'll miss you!" She cried. The first boy, whom I assumed to be Edgar, hugged her as well. "Who is going to play with us while you're away?" He asked. "No one cares for us like you Lady (y/n)!" The last boy said. They all started wailing and crying for her. "I shall return for you, this I swear." She said. "I may not be your natural born mother, but I will care for you all the same." Lady (y/n) gave them her basket and Liza opened it. It was filled with bread and fruits.

"Bless you Lady (y/n)!" Liza said happily. Lady (y/n) smiled and wiped their tears. She pulled a small cloth from the basket and cleaned their dirty faces. "I will return to you little ones." She said sweetly. She stood and dusted the dirt from her dress. "Shall we go then?" I asked. She nodded and we began our trek. "Fare thee well Lady (y/n)!" They called out.

Our trek back had been rather talkative, but a few things had been brought to my attention. The first thing I noticed was that she always walked three steps behind me, and not a step behind or ahead. Another thing was that she never said a rude word of me. Whatever she said about me was pleasant to hear. She also told me how her morning always began with a cup of coffee with cream, and how she celebrated every morning happily with a cherished greeting with everyone she came across, mainly due to her belief that she should celebrate it as if it was her last. Not to mention she refused to tell me when her birthday was. "When is your birthday?" I asked of her. "Oh, that's not important." Lady (y/n) had said. I raised an eyebrow. "But...that's the day you were brought into this world! Shouldn't such a day be celebrated?" I asked. She just smiled. "All days should be celebrated with monumental proportions! I may have been born on a single day, but we should celebrate the days I continue to live, no?" She said. Her perspective on life was absolutely wonderful, and that's what I loved most about her.

"Lord Death, I would like to introduce you to someone. This is Lady (y/n). She requested to come with me on our next quest to fight a witch." I said. Death looked at her. His fearsome appearance didn't seem to bother her whatsoever. "Aren't you a little weak to be fighting a witch?" He asked. She simply smiled. "I am more than just a female who spins her wheel." Lady (y/n) said. "I can assure you I am more than capable to defend myself." I looked at her. Beautiful as she was, she was rather dainty. Still, I could use a meister. But...surely her father wouldn't allow it.

"Excalibur, if you truly believe that she is able to defend herself, then I suppose you can bring her along." Death said. "Thank you Lord Death! You will not, nay, shan't regret it!" She said happily. She did a curtsy and wrapped her hands around my hand. "Come now Excalibur, we mustn't tarry!" Lady (y/n) said. I sighed and escorted her back outside. The sun had began to set, and she looked up at the sky as if it was the first time she had seen it. The look of wonder in her (e/c) made me smile.

"Excalibur, I want to thank you for letting me join you on your quest." She said. "It isn't very often I get respected for my sword skills. Being an unwed female, Father wants me to stay home all my life and spin thread until he can find me a husband. But that is not the life for me. I want to explore the world, discover new things, solve mysteries that no man could. And then prove to men that I am not just a source for bearing a son. I am a strong, powerful female swordswoman, and you cannot tell me otherwise. I will become a heroine." I looked at her, and her eyes caught mine. "Is...all of this true Lady (y/n)?" I asked. She smiled brightly, making me blush ever so slightly.

"I have never lied a day in my life Excalibur. I do not think I would like to begin today." She said. "Anyway, I would like to thank you with a dinner. I will prepare a meal of the freshest ingredients, and I can hear more about your adventures." I smiled. "You are in no debt to me, milady. Just your presence will do." I told her. "True, I owe you nothing. But I would like to do this for you, Great and Munificent Excalibur." Lady (y/n) said. "And please, call me (y/n)." I held her hand gently. It was soft and warm, like a fur. But this was much better than holding a fur in my hand. I escorted her to my home in complete silence. I was watching her eyes wander the sky and wondered how someone hadn't married her just yet.

We spent at least five hours that night solely speaking of my adventures; she was so fascinated by them. I told her of serving kings and fighting witches under Lord Death's command. She cooked a pleasant meal, and told me that she never cooked with carrots because she always fed them to the rabbits. Another odd thing I noticed: when I began to hum, she went completely silent. When I asked her about this, she replied that my humming was soothing to her ears and made her mind wander into wonderful places.

God, how I loved this woman.

When I finished telling my own tales, she told of how she wanted to seek harmony with the universe, saying that it was the only way one would achieve inner peace with themselves. She also said of how she was never picky with her food, and was extremely grateful for the lavish life she had. Her words were as beautiful as she. It was as if (y/n) was an angel sent from the heavens.

The next morning, I was immediately given a greeting. "A thousand lovely good mornings to you Excalibur!~♪" She said happily. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and saw her at my bedside. I smiled, remembering the events from yesterday. "Good morning (y/n)." I told her. She smiled and sat on the foot of my bed. "Come now Sir Excalibur! Another adventure begins soon." (y/n) said. I smiled. Such a refreshing morning. And such a refreshing greeting. I wanted all of my mornings to begin like this. I got out of bed. "I shall wait for you out in the garden. Make haste, good knight!" She said. She hummed and left the room with a sort of dance. It was evidently clear: this woman had no flaw. She was absolutely perfect. Perhaps even too good for a noble like myself.

Now now Excalibur, where's your humility?

I chuckled at my own folly and smiled. This was going to be one of the greatest quests I had ever been on.

"This is the place. The lair of the Great Dark Witch Akane." I said. It was a cave on the side of a hill. A small lake was next to it, but it was dark and more than likely not clean as well. She looked at me. "Excalibur, let me wield you." She said. I blushed. "A-Are you sure (y/n)?" I asked her. She nodded. "I have faith in myself. I may not be a queen, but I trust in myself and you enough to know that I can do this." I sighed and transformed into my sword form. By the way she stood, I could easily tell that she was experienced. "You're extremely light for a sword." She said. I appeared in the reflection of the blade. "That's great news (y/n), but I needn't remind you to keep your guard up." I said. She nodded once more and looked around. "My, my, my, I thought I would never see the day Death sent out for me with an amateur." A voice said. She looked all around herself. "Show yourself, coward! Why do you insult me and hide in the shadows?" She shouted. There was an evil laugh, and she prepared herself for anything. "Foolish child. I am the shadows!" The voice shouted. "(y/n)! Behind you!" I shouted. She turned and swung just in time to see a woman in all black clothes wielding a scythe. It had many jagged edges and was entirely black, including the blade. She wore a black dress and had short black hair with red eyes. "Great Dark Witch Akane. You have been ordered to be brought back to Shinigami-sama, dead or alive." She said in a very authoritative tone. The witch merely smiled. "Then let us see who will survive this battle." Akane said. The two began an extensive battle. Akane was mainly on the defensive side; (y/n) found it easier to find an opening than she did. "Oh, how cute! A female swordswoman who thinks that society won't just laugh at her. Mayhap if you grew a manhood they would let you become a knight." Akane teased. "I'm hearing a lot of talking from you, but you do not battle as well as your tongue dictates." (y/n) said. "I will drive the Holy Sword into your heart and rid this world of your presence." They continued to fight, but I didn't pay much attention. I was watching how graceful she was, even in her battle stance.

"Excalibur! Lend me your power!" (y/n) shouted. I shook my head and refocused on the battle. Her body glowed with a holy light and I smiled. "Holy Charge!" She chanted. I glowed in her hand. She charged at Akane, and Akane slashed up at her chest. "Nice try." (y/n) said. Before it could pierce her skin, the scythe blade shattered. "What the—" Akane began. (y/n) drove me into her chest as far she could, coming out on the side.

"Good riddance." She whispered as Akane fell to the ground. I came out of my weapon form and looked at her. She was breathing heavily. "That was excellent swordsmanship (y/n)." I told her. She smiled at me. I smiled back and stroked her hair gently. "(y/n), I know this is somewhat sudden...but..if I could become one of your suitors that w—" She hugged me tightly before I could finish, startling me. "I don't want a suitor. I want to be yours Excalibur." (y/n) said. "I could stay at your castle, and we could adopt the Hauteclaire children! Oh, say you will Excalibur!" I smiled and she looked up at me. "I will. I swear on it." I said softly. I kissed her gently, wrapping my arms around her.

~TIME SKIP, 800 YEARS LATER~

I won't have any other meister if they're not just like (y/n) anymore. That's why I have created my 1000 Provisions, all based off of things she loved and cared for. I now rest in the British Isles since the Eight Powerful Warriors have disbanded from Asura becoming a Kishin. It seems like I can no longer be humble. (y/n) spoiled me so much that I just can't do it anymore. Of course, neither her or our Hauteclair-(l/n) children survived the 800 years. I watched her grow old and watch our children do the same. I changed my form short after that; I no longer have a human form, but I do have a single portrait of our family the day (y/n) were happily married. I haven't found love since then, but there was one boy who was very much like her. However, his personality wasn't true to hers, and he returned me to my cave right after a sneezing fit. I miss her. I need her. All I ever wanted was

Her.
Just another contest entry. Enjoy!

Oh I'm not crying! Someone left a bowl of onions here! Yeah, that's it.

But seriously, I loved this story! I adore Excalibur! He's my favorite character from Soul Eater and this was a perfect reader insert! I tip my hat to you!
